Christmas decorations burst out of the Christmas storage boxes onto the chair, table, and sofa like a bad flu bug. After working 2 very long and exhausting nursing work days, I just look at the beautiful decorations with tired eyes and little enthusiasm. It’s time to take a day off so that I can rally for the rest of the holiday season. So, I prepare to take care of what my body needs. Today it will be a movie and writing this blog post. I’m taking a suggestion from the Ferris Bueller playbook (especially the scene by the pool).
Listening to your body is essential to your health. Although, many times you see what others need and those needs become more important than what you need; especially the needs of your children (You have a teaching moment here for your kids. Taking care of yourself teaches your children the importance of self-care. That’s a bonus!) Often though, you may see yourself losing touch with how your body feels because of distractions, demands, and just plain fatigue. What does that mean for you? It means finding yourself reaching far past your limit of time and energy. Past the point of sanity and lashing out to those around you.
So, what do you need to start your rally for health?
This week, check in with yourself about how your body feels. Take a moment, feel your feet, your, heart, your head. If you need a reminder to start, try setting a timer on your smartphone or another timer available. What does this mean for you? It means you get a chance to meet your wants or needs at any given moment. This gives you the opportunity to make a difference in your health. Truly a gift for you and your family.
